French Placement Test in Montreal Which Option Is Right for You

French Placement Test in Montreal: Which Option Is Right for You?

If you have studied French before, returning to language learning can raise an important question: what is my current French level?

Whether you completed francization courses, studied French years ago, or recently moved to Montréal, evaluating your level is often the first step toward choosing the right course and continuing your learning journey with confidence.

At the Alliance Française de Montréal, learners can choose between two different placement options: an online adaptive assessment and an online oral placement test with a teacher.

Both assessments help determine your level, but they are designed for different needs and learner profiles.

Why Does a French Placement Test Matter?

A placement test does more than simply assign a level. It helps learners:

  • understand their current abilities
  • identify strengths and areas for improvement
  • choose the most appropriate course
  • avoid enrolling in a class that is too easy or too challenging
  • receive guidance on the next steps in their learning journey

For many learners, a placement test provides clarity after months or even years away from French studies.

Two Ways to Evaluate Your French Level

At the Alliance Française de Montréal, learners can choose between two assessment formats. Both evaluations are offered at the same price and are reimbursed upon registration in a first French group course.

The best option depends on your objectives, learning preferences, and level of guidance required.

1. Choose ELAO+ If You Want a Fast and Flexible Assessment

How ELAO+ Works

The ELAO+ platform uses adaptive technology, meaning that questions automatically adjust according to your answers.

The evaluation includes:

  • listening comprehension
  • grammar and vocabulary
  • oral expression assessment

At the end of the assessment, learners receive a personalized report indicating their estimated level and learning recommendations.

Who Is ELAO+ Best For?

ELAO+ may be a good option if you:

  • want immediate results
  • prefer completing the assessment independently
  • need a general overview of your level
  • want the flexibility to take the test at any time

Because it is available online, learners can complete it whenever it is most convenient for them.

2. Choose an Oral Placement Test If You Want Personalized Guidance

Oral Placement Test

How the Oral Evaluation Works

Conducted remotely with a teacher via Teams, the oral placement test lasts approximately 20 minutes and is scheduled by appointment.

The evaluation focuses on spoken interaction and helps determine your level according to the CEFR framework and the pedagogical structure of the Alliance Française de Montréal.

Who Is the Oral Placement Test Best For?

This option is particularly useful for learners who:

  • are seriously considering enrolling in a course
  • would like personalized recommendations
  • have questions about course formats or schedules
  • want support choosing the most suitable learning path

Unlike an automated assessment, the oral evaluation also provides an opportunity to discuss your learning objectives directly with a teacher.
