The Test de Connaissance du Français (TCF) is an international reference test that measures your level of knowledge and skills in French.

We offer preparation courses run by our TEF-certified experts, enabling you to familiarize yourself with the structure of this test, as well as practicing for the 4 required tests: reading comprehension, listening comprehension, writing and speaking.

  • The Alliance Française declines all responsibility for the candidate’s choice of exams.
  • Registration subject to availability.
  • Only one change is permitted if the request is received no later than 15 days before the examination date.
  • A non-refundable fee of $75 will be charged for cancellations received no later than 15 days before the exam date.
  • No refunds or changes will be accepted after 15 days before the exam date.
  • Candidates must respect the 20-day waiting period imposed by the TCF OR TEF. The Alliance Française will not be held responsible if this rule is not respected by the candidate, and no refund will be made.
  • The exact times will be sent by e-mail 7 days before the exam, so please reserve the whole day. These times are neither flexible nor modifiable.
  • Results are valid for 2 years.
  • Children are not accepted during parents’ exams. (We do not have daycare available)
  • Cell phones and other electronic devices are not permitted during the exams. You must hand in your electronic devices at reception and they will be returned to you at the end of your exam.

TCF Canada - 4 tests

TCF Canada is a test accredited by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada(IRCC). Since the end of January 2022, TCF Canada has also been recognized by the Ministère de l'Immigration, de la Francisation et de l'Intégration(MIFI) for immigration applications in the province of Quebec. The TCF Canada is made up of 4 compulsory tests assessing competency in French as a general language:
  • Listening comprehension: 35 min - Group test -39 multiple-choice questions.
  • Reading comprehension: 60 min - Group test - 39 multiple-choice questions.
  • Written expression: 60 min - Group test - 3 exercises.
  • O ral expression: 12 min - Individual test with an examiner - 3 exercises.

TCF for Quebec (TCF QC) - 4 modular tests

TCF Québec is intended for anyone aged 16 or over, regardless of nationality or mother tongue, who wishes to submit an immigration application to the Quebec Ministry of Immigration, Francization and Integration (MIFI).
TCF Québec was designed to meet the requirements of the Quebec authorities, who have made standardized French tests and examinations mandatory and systematic as part of the procedures for obtaining the Certificat de sélection du Québec (CSQ) leading to the issuance of a permanent visa. This measure also applies to French and French-speaking immigrants. The Quebec authorities also recognize, as an exemption, the TCF for the general public with the oral expression test, as well as the DELF and DALF diplomas (provided a minimum mark is obtained in the oral comprehension and oral expression tests, and the diploma is valid for less than 2 years). The TCF Québec is made up of 4 modular tests assessing competency in French as a general language. Each candidate may choose to take 1, 2, 3 or 4 of the following tests:
  • Listening comprehension: 25 min - Group test - 39 multiple-choice questions.
  • Reading comprehension*: 50 mm - Group test - 39 multiple-choice questions

    Listening comprehension 25 minutes : Group test: 34 multiple-choice questions.
    Written comprehension : 50 minutes : Group test: 34 multiple-choice questions
  • Written expression: 60 min - Group tests - 3 exercises

TCF Integration, Residence and Nationality (IRN) - 4 tests

This exam is NOT VALID for immigration applications to Quebec and Canada. The TCF IRN is intended for all foreigners over the age of 16 wishing to validate their level of French in order to :
  • - an application for French nationality ;
  • - an application for a long-term resident card ;
  • - validation of A1 level as part of the OFII citizenship program.
The TCF IRN assesses only language skills, not knowledge of French history, culture and society. The TCF IRN is made up of 4 compulsory tests assessing competency in French as a general language:
  • Listening comprehension: 15 min - Group test - 20 multiple-choice questions.
  • Reading comprehension: 20 minutes - Group test - 20 multiple-choice questions.
  • Written expression: 30 minutes - Group tests - 3 exercises.
  • O ral expression: 10 minutes - Individual test with an examiner - 3 exercises.

TCF General public - 3 compulsory tests - 2 additional tests

The TCF for the general public is aimed at anyone aged 16 or over who is not a native speaker of French and who wishes to have their level of French assessed for academic (students, future students, trainees, etc.), professional (employees or future employees, etc.) or personal reasons. With a compulsory written expression test, the TCF for the general public is the official test recognized by the Ministry of Higher Education and the Ministry of Culture as part of the DAP. The TCF is made up of 3 compulsory tests, presented in the form of multiple-choice questions (MCQs), and 2 complementary and optional tests, proposed in the form of exercises, which candidates can choose to take or not, depending on their needs:
  • Listening comprehension*: 25 min - Group test - 29 multiple-choice questions.
  • Mastery of language structures*: 15 min - Group test - 18 multiple-choice questions.
  • Reading comprehension: 45 minutes - Group test - 29 multiple-choice questions.
  • Written expression: 60 minutes - Group tests - 3 exercises.
  • O ral expression: 12 minutes - Individual test with an examiner - 3 exercises.
